Alex’s Story

Hi and Welcome to Try Talking Therapy,
Finding the right therapist is an important part of the process. You need to find someone who helps you feel comfortable and who you feel can understand what you are sharing with them.
That is why I think it is important you have the opportunity to get to know me. Firstly, you might be wondering what my qualifications are? Well, I was awarded a first class honours in Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of Edgehill. During my time on this course I participated in two placements where I developed and honed my skills as a Person-Centred Experiential (PCE) Counsellor and Psychotherapist (more on PCE here). Since then I have continued onto further education, enrolling on a Masters in Psychology to further my knowledge and understanding of the human condition. I am also employed as a therapist within a residential alcohol and drug addiction rehabilitation centre where I support adults as they begin their journey into sobriety.
Before I began this journey into Counselling I spent over a decade working in hospitality. This took me from Birmingham to London to Japan and Hong Kong and then latterly, to Ireland. During this time, for many years I struggled with my mental health. I struggled with anxiety, shame, low self-esteem and depression. All of this played a part in what I denied for many years as being part of my addiction. I spent years using drink, drugs and relationships as a way to to avoid the emotional turmoil I was experiencing, but lacked the courage to ask for help for.
Going to therapy allowed me to recognise where a lot of my pain was coming from, that the confidence I gained from using drink and drugs was purely a facade and that within me, I held the potential and the knowledge to improve my life for the better. Since this turning point I have achieved a number of years sober, maintained healthier relationships with family members and of course my partner, held down jobs successfully and improved my career potential tenfold. In addition to this what I find the most significant change within me has been my ability to understand my emotions and regulate them in a much more functional manner.
If you are experiencing similar to what I have just described, I believe that I can help you navigate your way to a more fulfilling life in ways that are meaningful to you. Although I adhere to the traditions of the Person-Centred approach, I also incorporate aspects of other modalities including DBT and Solution-Focused therapy.
What I believe I offer is a fresh, alternative style to counselling and psychotherapy. Although our aim will be to explore your emotions. It will be in a way that is comfortable for you. I know, that when I first set out on finding a therapist I was often off put by the lack of men that looked and spoke like me. I can assure you that my perspective and approach will be one that will support individuals who have felt like therapy, or emotional exploration is not for them.
So, whether you are a man or woman struggling with anxiety, overwhelming anger or sadness and struggling to live a life to your full potential please reach out. I also offer counselling services to young people aged 16+. I feel that the earlier you access counselling the sooner you can begin to live a fulfilling life. I have experience working within young men’s groups supporting young men experiencing anxiety and low self-esteem. If this is you or you are the parent / guardian of someone experiencing these symptoms then please reach out.
